“A lot of cartoonists feel like they’re on the outside looking in. As I’ve settled here in Vermont, this is the first place I’ve lived where I’ve really felt like a citizen.”
James Sturm’s popular graphic novel, “The Golem’s Mighty Swing,” was named the best comic of 2001 by Time magazine. The award galvanized Sturm to leave his career in academia, which he found stifling, and begin a journey that led him to Vermont.
Here, he opened the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, Vermont. The center offers studies that center on the creation and dissemination of comics, graphic novels, and other manifestations of the visual narrative. Experienced and internationally recognized cartoonists, writers, and designers teach classes.
