US News and World Report recently issued its rankings for Top States for Gender Pay Equity. Vermont ranks #4 on this list, with one of the smallest gender pay equity gaps and second in overall equality. Strong equal pay laws solidified Vermont’s spot in the top ranks. In addition, Vermont is the #1 state in the country in the ratio of male to female labor force participation. The annual rankings show Vermont’s high standing in a variety of categories.
Vermont lawmakers are working to improve even these high rankings. On April 10, 2018 Governor Phil Scott proclaimed Equal Pay Day, and a number of bills designed to close the gender pay gap are working their way through the legislature.
